how do I search within a filter that already has a search as part of the filter?

The behaviour when one tries to refine a filter that contains a 'search' with a further 'search' seems to remove the initial search. To reproduce, follow steps below:

Steps 1: search for all cases except cases in inbox. use -project:inbox 2: save as a filter 3: click 'refine search", select "search", entered say "starredby:me"

now note that the refinement -project:inbox has disappeared and the results aren't as (I) expected

Oh dear! Just after posting question I worked out the answer: instead of clicking on 'refine' to refine the filter, click on the search parameter. This will let you append to the search string.
