There are four types of users:

  • Normal
  • Administrator
  • Virtual
  • Community

Where does the Correspondent fit into these types, and how would I translate a Correspondent into a User?

When I've created a User with the same email as a Correspondent, the User shows 0 open cases - what I was expecting was that the User would then inherit what was previously the Correspondents history.

Edit for clarity 2011-03-03 The reason I want to do this is we have cases which have been created by internal staff via the Inbox BEFORE those staff became Normal Users, and I would like for their history to be attached to them once they become users.

This seems like it would be a valid use case for Community Users as well - say you have a client submitting cases via Email, whom you want to subsequently give access to Community resources.

A correspondent in FogBugz is not a type of user. It is merely a field associated with cases that are created via email.

There is currently no built-in way to translate a correspondent into a user.

There might be a better way to answer your question if you could tell us why you're looking to create a user that would be associated with all of the cases created by a specific email.

If you're just looking for a way to see all of the cases opened by a specific customer's email address, you could use the correspondent search axis:

correspondent:yourcustomer@example.com

Note that the email address used to create a case is broken down into two different links when viewing a case that has a correspondent:

  1. The "yourcustomer" portion is a link to an exact search for all other cases opened via that exact email address (e.g., all other cases opened by yourcustomer@example.com).

  2. The "example.com" portion is a link to a broader search for all other cases opened via any email address from that domain (e.g., all other cases opened by any email address @example.com)

Thanks for your answer, but you don't really address the core concern of my question. You asked for clarity on why I'm looking to create a user that would be associated with all the cases created by a specific email, and I've done so, even though I thought my original question pretty much addressed your point. Any more insight? – G. Richard Bellamy Mar 29 2011 at 5:37
