Is it possible to change the case category/icon without leaving the case list? Is there any addon/plugin to do this? Because I need to recategorise hundreds of cases and editing each one would be too slow.

If nothing else works, which column of the "bug" table in the database do I edit to change the category of a case? would it destroy the integrity of the database if I manually keyed in values for all the cases?

You can select multiple cases and perform a bulk edit. I've found that displaying a large number of cases slows IE down, but works okay with FireFox.

What I would do is try to come up with a search which shows only the cases you want to change, run the search, click on the "Display all cases (may be slow)" link, click in the selection box on the title line of the table of cases on the resulting page, and click on the Edit button. This will allow you to make the same category change to all the cases at once.

@James - When I select multiple cases using the checkmarks, and press the Edit button on the case list toolbar, there are NO editing controls. It just shows "[various]" on all the fields and I only have an editable textbox. Why? – Jeremy Feb 19 2011 at 13:30

@Jeremy - I haven't had to do this for a while, and there's a gotcha I forgot about. The bulk edit feature only permits you to modify a field which is the same for all the cases being edited, so you'll have to limit your search to a single category, and repeat it for each category you want to change. I found this a little frustrating at first, but got so used to it that it completely slipped my mind. – James McLeod Feb 19 2011 at 15:10
@James - Still showing [various] at various times. Completely sick and tired of editing them manually. Is there a plugin that allows me to swap the icon from the case list? – Jeremy Feb 20 2011 at 4:22

"[various]" should show up only for fields which are not the same in all cases being bulk-edited. If you are experiencing this for fields which are definitely constant across all the cases, you may have found a bug. I'll have to step back and leave it for FogBugz tech support to help you sort out. – James McLeod Feb 20 2011 at 17:37

Okay, one last thought - I don't think you can edit most fields on cases which have been closed. If you want to use the bulk edit feature on closed cases, you'll have to reopen them first. – James McLeod Feb 21 2011 at 12:47
