I know there's a bunch of search axes available, but when I want to search a certain term, say the word "term", that's in a project, named "project", if I search for the following:

term project

It will not show any results. If I search for just:

term

It will show the result I am looking for. Why is this? Why doesn't the search include project names? I know there's a way around it, but shouldn't it 'just work' in the most intuitive way, as well?

Thanks!! :)

P.S. When a search results in nothing, it requires two clicks and loading of a new page to see how to improve the search. Why not just show the axis information right there, on the spot where you need it, rather than telling a little blurb about it, and then linking to a webpage where you have to read a question and then scroll down to find the answer. It would be better if it was just right there on the spot without a bunch of other things distracting you away from the answer itself.

p.S.S. I would like to be notified of replies automatically, and not have to click the checkbox each time. I understand that by not having it clicked, I am forced to come back to check, and I get more involved into the forums -- I read Joel's article on that. But I also read the article where your day goes better when all the little things just work, and this little thing is not remembering my setting. ;) The check mark even disappears when there's a problem with the post! It doesn't even remember it when it tells me to fix something (e.g. too many tags). Bad.

This is because it is useful to distinguish between searching for the word "project" in a case and searching for a project itself.

Try

term project:"project"

instead.

The search

term project

looks for cases which contain both the words "term" and "project".

Thanks for the reply. I would guess, like Google has shown us, that it's best to make the search work as intuitively as possible; that is, search everywhere for the words I type in. If I want to do something more accurate, say search only the word "xyz" in project names, then I can invoke advanced search operators like 'project:', just like Google does (allinurl:). It's hard to argue against Google's methods, especially considering this is what the world is used to, and is, by far, the most intuitive of all. Thanks for the tips on how to get it to work, but can I remove such requirements? – Jason Doucette Feb 7 2011 at 15:59
