The FogBugz built-in search is terribly unscalable to say the least, and without tags it became practically useless for 20,000 documents. As Joel himself once said, "sort, don't search". I would like this question to be a meeting place for people who managed to work around it in a large organization, and throw ideas for FogBugz improvement.

Here're some requirements:

  • search in history and any other texts accessible from URL
  • page rank based on usage and link stats
  • one place to search everything, "search out" from the FB console to other places, intranet websites - not sure you can do that
  • word in a title has more weight
  • suggestions while typing - my users do not know spelling
  • tweaking search manually
  • we really need it to work faster, hopefully while typing

It is important because the more accessible the information is, the more people invest in documenting important things.

We are using in-office FB installation and what we've been considering is installing this device or similar and let it index all intranet including the FB server. It has an issue with privileges of the indexing and actual user. Does anybody have experience with this type of solutions? Did you have a better idea?

The adding of a really spectacular search feature has been on the road map and under consideration for some time now, but has always been preempted by other, more valuable features.

We have two million cases and still find search to be useful to us (at least, useful enough to wait the 10-20 seconds for it to return results).
