If I find a case that I think should be part of my parent case and make the edit to do so, does the assignee of the former parent case get notified?

Should they?

I think the answer would seem to depend very much on how each FB customer uses the software -- I might think it's great to get an email every time something changes but many people may not.

Maybe what's needed instead is a way that multiple notifications can be configured (in a similar way to how multiple workflows can be configured using the Workflow plugin). Using a system like this, you could have a Default Notification that basically worked just like it does now but then additional Notification configurations could be built as well. Each Notification Configuration would list all the events that could generate a notification email and yes/no could be selected for that event. Just a few examples of events could be:

  • Parent case reassigned
  • Child case reassigned
  • Status changed in case
  • History changed in case
  • ...

Our general issue with this is that there's a trade-off between adding options for more power and making the software more confusing. It might be best to send notifications and let people do the filtering via their email client. The Autosubscribe plug-in could also possibly be enhanced to subscribe you to each sub-case of a case assigned to you. The question would be whether you remained subscribed to it after it was no longer a child case of your case. – Rich Armstrong Nov 13 2009 at 15:47
I totally agree with trade-off of more power and more confusion, Rich. I'm just suggesting that whatever default you pick, someone will likely be unhappy -- just as people sometimes were with the default workflow. If the default isn't what someone likes but there's an optional Notification plugin (like the Workflow plugin) that allows for more customization, then we're golden! – Ken Morse Nov 16 2009 at 3:40
