I'm attempting to change the database specifics on FogBugz (via Site Config/Database) and I'm getting the message:

To edit this site's database connection settings, you must browse to this page directly from the FogBugz web server.

I am using a remote desktop session into the fogbugz server, and am using IE.

Version is FogBugz 8.1.4 (DB 770, Build 1)

Any ideas?

In the browser, are you navigating to the site using the host name or localhost? Logout of FogBugz and then navigate to:

http://localhost/FogBugz

Instead of:

http://servername/FogBugz

Now your cookie will be associated with localhost amd you should be able to modify the database settings. Alternatively, you can edit your connection string directly in the registry. The value you want is called sConnectionString and it's found in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Fog Creek Software\FogBugz\[your FogBugz install]

My fogbugz site is setup as fogbugz.[domain]. Is there a way to configure it as responding on both fogbugz.[domain] AND localhost? – Matt Simmons Nov 18 2010 at 16:01
@Matt Yes, if you go into IIS and edit the bindings, you can specify which hostnames a site is bound to. – Rob Sobers Nov 18 2010 at 18:59

Are you using "localhost" or "[machine name].[domain].local"? If not, FogBugz isn't able to definitively distinguish between local and remote.

If the FogBugz site isn't bound to localhost, then you'll need to change the connection string in the registry. You can do that at:

HKLM\Software\Fog Creek Software\FogBugz\[Your FogBugz Install Directory\sConnectionString

Interesting. I distinctly remember being able to do this before, but it doesn't work now. In any event, I don't actually have that key. I have an sInstallerUrl and an sLanguage, but no sConnectionString. Do I need to manually add it? – Matt Simmons Nov 18 2010 at 15:51
@Matt We tightened security around this feature recently. You must have a sConnectionString value. Perhaps it's under the Wow6432Node under HKLM\Software? – Rob Sobers Nov 18 2010 at 18:58
