I am trying to install 8.1.1 (upgrade from 7.3.5) on an Ubuntu Linux system. So far this whiz-bang stakexchange thing has been totally unhelpful. Like most "online support systems" they help the supporters but not the supportees.

We're hoping to increase the usefulness of this system as time goes on. The install/upgrade instructions for Windows are "Run the installer EXE." The install instructions for Linux are "Untar the installer and run install.sh."

That's pretty much it. We put a huge amount of effort into our installers for exactly this reason.

The README file (in the tarball) and the well-designed install.sh script are all that are needed. Installation went very smoothly (on Ubuntu 9.10 aka karmic). Not a single question. (Message to myself: RTFM!)

Extract the README file from the tarball ... It's a start.
