I don't know if I'm alone in this, but it generally takes me days, if not weeks, to craft a Wiki entry. In my business, it's important to the readers that the information in the wiki entry is correct, and it takes time to check this and get the entry just right.

At the moment, as soon as I put even an outline on the wiki, it is visible to all and sundry. So I end up having to tell everyone that it is actually a work in progress and could they please just hold off until I've finished.

It would be really neat to have a tick-box to indicate that I (the creator of the entry) am the only person who should be able to see it right now. I can then leave that box ticked until I am happy to publish the entry.

Write your article in a private wiki, then when you're done, use the Wiki Article Info: Details plugin to Move the article from the private wiki to the public one.

If I might offer a work around - pick a highlight colour that means "work in progress". For unpublished Wiki articles, before you save, click Ctrl-a to select the entire page and change the highlight. When you are ready to publish... Ctrl-a and Highlight Colour: None.

Tell everyone if the entire article is highlit, then it isn't gospel. That way, rather than keeping it hidden you can get their feedback.

This won't work if you use a Highlight for other reasons in your text.

If I could vote, I'd vote for Ken's answer. It simply means you use an explicit link to create a new article (e.g. "Drafts:NewArticle" to make a new draft in the private Wiki (named "Drafts")) and "Specs:OldArticle" to refer to an existing page in the public Wiki (named "Specs)). That's way less intrusive than my idea. – PJM Nov 4 2009 at 19:12

One method for doing this would be to create a new Wiki group that only you (or a select group have permissions to). Create your Wiki entry in that group and then when your entry is ready, you can move it into the more public group.

I believe that this was one purpose for the Tags feature in FB 7. Create a tag called "Draft" and remove it once you are done. I might also recommend using an Index page of links to your wiki articles - either include links to draft articles in a separated section of the index, or ensure that the index doesn't link to draft articles until the draft is completed. This doesn't prevent someone from finding it via search, but should help.

It would be nice to have the ability to control visibility a bit more - but then, this is a wiki engine, not a full content management system...
