Granting a user all of the privileges of Site Admin because they need the ability to share filters for a project is less than ideal. It would be very helpful if there was a way to grant this ability to normal users.

A few options:

  1. Add a "Filter Admins" configuration at the Project level with a UI that behaves the same as the Project Admins section. Any users listed would be allowed to share filters with anyone else who can see that project.

  2. Add permission at the group level. Either allow only group admins or add a new permission level with another radio button column "Share Filters" between "Modify" and "Group Admin". This would allow a filter to be shared with any user in the group. Note by Fog Creek: FogBugz 8 no longer has the Group Admin role and does not map Projects directly to Groups

  3. Add permission at the user level. On the user edit screen, add a Yes/No option for "Can share filters", which lets a normal user share a site wide filter exactly like a Site Admin is currently able.

While the options you describe are not currently available, anyone is free to send the URL equivalent of their filters to others (go to the list page, click More (on the far right of the filter bar), click Permanent Link). You can then copy the URL out of the address bar, and send that to anyone else that might want to use the same filter. – Daniel LeCheminant Oct 6 2010 at 15:21
I can't stand how this is architected - Even group admins (who can create projects) can't share filters. This needs to change as I don't want to give Site level administration just to share filters. – Ken Perkins Oct 6 2010 at 19:06
Yep - this is something that has been asked for in the past: fogbugz.stackexchange.com/questions/1714/…. Should we vote it up here, there, or in both locations? – Justine Oct 12 2010 at 12:02
I would do the other one, as it already has 14 votes. No need to split our attention two ways for one issue :) Thanks for posting the other question, Justine. – Bradford Oct 12 2010 at 15:21

Update: As of FogBugz 8.3, anyone can share a filter and site admins can unshare any shared filter.

We have a case open to consider this feature for a future release. Please up-vote this question (not this answer) to show your support for adding this feature.

How do I obtain FogBugz 8.3? The most recent version on the download page is FogBugz 8.2.25. – joshl Jan 24 2011 at 21:06
It should be out in the next day or so barring any problems – adambox Jan 25 2011 at 22:03
8.3 is in fact out, in case anyone is curious, still :) – Bradford Feb 3 2011 at 22:24
sorry, I've been searching the docs, but can't figure out how to share a filter... I'm using the OnDemand edition, can you share filters on those? – Quang May 24 2011 at 9:09
You can share any of your filters under Filters -> Manage Saved Filters – adambox May 24 2011 at 11:02
