Given questions like this one, why did you guys decide to display the FogBugz 8 wiki editor inside of the wiki template?

Our Wiki product has always used a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get or "WYSIWYG" editor. One of the biggest flaws with most WYSIWYG editors (including our old one) is that they are not usually shown inside of the template that the article content will later be wrapped with. In other words, you're not really getting what you're seeing.

But in FogBugz 8, if you're using the FogBugz 8 default template for your wiki, our new WYSIWYG editor will appear inside of the template. We've tried to remove as many of the editor's custom styles as possible so that the page you're editing looks as close as possible to the one everyone else will see once you're done editing it. In fact, the only real difference on the Edit page is the editor's toolbar at the top for modifying your article's title and tags.

As a result of all the work we've done to ensure that our new editor works properly inside of the FogBugz 8 template, we've also decided to make the FogBugz 8 template read-only. You'll still be able to make changes to our template, but you'll need to first make a copy of it via the new Copy feature we've added to the template list page (Wiki -> Manage Wikis... -> Customize Templates). As a result, our new WYSIWYG editor will only appear inside of the built-in FogBugz 8 template. For all other templates (including copies of the FogBugz 8 default template), the editor will be shown on the page by itself (as described in this answer).

One highly annoying result of editing in the template is having two vertical scrollbars when editing a wiki page. One scrollbar is for the content I'm editing, because it doesn't fit in the edit window, and another is for the overall page, because it doesn't fit on my screen. This means that I have to first use the outer scroller to make the edit box fully visible, then use the inner scroller to get to the bit I want to edit. I invariably forget the first step, so I try to use the inner, realize my mistake, use the outer, then use the inner again. I'd rather be able to edit fullscreen. – Todd Apr 5 at 0:20
@Todd out of curiosity, what is the screen resolution of the computer you're using when you have the double-scrollbar problem? – db Apr 5 at 13:07

I'm having the same problem. If you change your wiki template, using the WYSIWYG editor's purpose is completely defeated since what you see is NOT what you get. I would strongly suggest considering my last request to enable another method of editing.

  • WYSIWYG is good for people who have no experience in any other way of formatting a text other than Word-like editors.
  • HTML enables a load of new features, but is difficult (especially if it's self-generated in the strange way it is now), a lot less clear and much slower (open and close tags)
  • lightweight editors show the structure in fast to learn and clear way

I really wonder what the reason was behind choosing the first two for the FogBugz wiki.
