Is there a search axis to limit the search to the current filter (that is, the one I get when I click "List cases")?

[edit] Rationale:
I am responsible for planning multiple projects between multiple developers, and thus have set up a range of filters that give me different views. (e.g. thing to do for release X, things to do on a current project, things I have to do, etc.)

I often search incrementally, e.g. I start searching for, in this sequence,

  • starts burning
  • starts burning status:active
  • starts burning status:active project:firetruck

In most cases I see myself copying down conditions from my current filter, or could set these restrictions faster by picking an appropriate filter.

Adidtional idea: Sometimes (just sometimes) I also wish to do the reverse: turn a search into a filter. (I can bookmark the search, but that not uite the same)

Maybe "Filter" could be extended by a "search for" condition, so that they are convertible into each other. Finally, the stars will align and the two ways will be one!

I really like this idea. I often find myself wanting to do a recursive search. Maybe instead of specifying a filter name, you could specify an axis that means "only search within my current results." This would apply if your case list were a filter or the results of some other search. I think this would speed things up greatly, too. – Rob Sobers Sep 28 2010 at 20:09
After performing any search, click the save link on the right side of the screen. That saves it as a filter. – Ted Sep 28 2010 at 20:52
search in current results - another thing I once though of ;) – peterchen Sep 28 2010 at 21:10

No, that's an interesting request though. You can edit the current filter by adding and removing search phrases though, which will have the same effect.

thanks, at least I know I haven't overlooked anything ;) I've added a rationale why I would want it. Could you please clarify "You can edit the current filter by adding and removing search phrases though"? I can't add a search query to the filter, can I? – peterchen Sep 28 2010 at 18:32
After clicking "refine further" there is a Search For option that accepts all the same queries you can enter into the search box. – Ted Sep 28 2010 at 20:51
Ah ok! It's there, just a bit far away (and it changes my current list). – peterchen Sep 28 2010 at 21:12
