I heard that FogBugz support for Microsoft Access is being deprecated.

Is that true, and what does that mean?

As of FogBugz 8.0, support for Microsoft Access is being deprecated.

MS Access still works perfectly well with FogBugz 8.0. We performed extensive testing against Access.

This does mean, however, that in the near future we may be discontinuing support for Access. If and when we decide to do this, we will provide an easy migration path from Access to SQL Server Express for any customers still using Access.

We originally supported Access in order to offer a very simple, free database to those users who didn't want to use SQL Server or MySQL on Windows.

As FogBugz has grown in functionality, we've managed to maintain our support for Access, but we keep adding functionality, and that means a reckoning is in the offing. We've reached a point where Access doesn't have the row-level locking capability we need to make FogBugz a secure and functional web application. We've always stood by the precept of "running on whatever you've got." But now we've outstripped Access's ability to do what we need to do.

The good news is that if you're on Access, we've got a plan to get you onto SQL Server Express, and the staff to help you get there. Please contact us and we'll make sure that FogBugz will work for you for years to come.

Now that SQL Server Express is available for free (and FogBugz on Demand is such an easy solution for most), we are sending out this official "heads-up" that we may soon be discontinuing Access support.

Dropping Access is a good thing (sorry)

The free SQL Express is the way to go.

MS Access is great for reporting. Nothing beats it. But I can link my MS Access to SQL server so nothing is lost.
