I previously grouped by projects together by client using groups. This allowed me to then filter my list to see all cases for a group which would ineffect show all the cases for a client.

Since the upgrade to fogbugz 8 I seem to have lost the ability to filter by group?

FogBugz 8.4.87 and later

You can use the Project Groups Plugin to categorize projects and filter and search by the groups by using the ProjectGroup axis. Install it via Admin -> Plugins

Older versions of 8

After talking to Lee and understanding his prior usage of the software, we've figured out a workaround that approximates the prior usage of groups as groupings of projects rather than permissions.

The thing that filter by group gives you is the ability to see several projects in one filter. We solve that problem by adding the prior group name to the name of the project, and using the Search For capability to make a filter that returns multiple projects.

For instance, here's a set of groups with their projects:

  • Coke: Bottle, Open, Drink
  • Pizza: Deliver, Slice, Eat

Previously, you filters would look something like this:

Filter: All cases that are active associated with Pizza

To get this functionality back, you simply add the group name to the project name. Here's my new list of projects:

  • Bottle (Coke)
  • Deliver (Pizza)
  • Drink (Coke)
  • Eat (Pizza)
  • Open (Coke)
  • Slice (Pizza)

To get a list of active cases, you add a search to a filter to look like this:

Filter: All cases that are active containing Project:Coke

This gives you the exact same list of cases the previous groups-based filter gave you. Plus, it's a bit easier to administer and a bit more visible.

I tried this as a workaround, but it seems to display the "Cannot Add Case" text where it would normally allow cases to be added. Is it possible to filter multiple projects and retain the ability to add cases? – Sam Oct 7 2010 at 2:50
Hmmm. Might not work, but are you filtering by project? I think adding a filter to a search removes quick case addition by default. So, an imperfect workaround. – Rich Armstrong Oct 12 2010 at 13:34
you won't be able to use add case because fogbugz doesn't know what project to use for the new case. In general, search strings in filters prevent the Add Case link – adambox Oct 26 2010 at 19:17
Some of my groups had 100+ projects in them. Renaming all of them is frustrating at best. – msemack Mar 22 2011 at 21:59

I'd like to add a me-too here.

This 'upgrade' broke all our shared filters, and as far as I can tell from looking around this site, there's no workaround that isn't also hideously broken. For now we've changed them all from filtering by group (i.e. client) to filtering by project, which is a load of work both now and for ever more.

Just count me as a pissed-off customer who wishes he'd realised in time and had all the right backups in place so he could go back to the previous version.

Groups were not designed to be used as a way to categorize Projects, so we did not expect that the permissions change we implemented in 8.0 would have such a (negative) impact on some users. Of course, as long as there are features, they will be "misused" ;) I would very much like to work with you to make sure your setup is functioning as you require under the new permissions setup. Could you drop me a line? fogcreek.com/sendmail.html – adambox Oct 26 2010 at 19:24
Misused or not, the features were available and our ondemand account used it extensively. You manage the Database, so you could have easily measured the affect of the change. Surely the database change scripts would have to have changed the existing filters when you changed the security within the database. – Jamie Clayton Oct 27 2010 at 11:58

@adambox - this seems an extraordinarily rude answer to your customers. The whole original group security system was added after endless requests from those of us doing consulting-type activities with multiple clients. To then turn around and accuse us of misusing it is absurd. – Will Dean Nov 10 2010 at 21:03
@will sorry for a late response here. I certainly did not mean to appear rude or to suggest that it's our way or the highway. As I said, features will always be used in unanticipated ways and we want to work with you to make sure FogBugz meets your needs. Please drop us a line: fogcreek.com/sendmail.html – adambox Feb 1 2011 at 19:23
@adambox Clients and Groups were advertised as a way to organize projects. joelonsoftware.com/articles/FogBugzI.html I would say the feature WAS NOT used in an unanticipated way. FYI, the FogBugz 8 upgrade broke our entire project hierarchy. (over 200 projects!) – msemack Mar 22 2011 at 21:55

I had a similar problem. See the answers to my question: how-can-i-retreive-my-departments

Thanks for the link but it would be good if the Fog Creek team would allow filter by group again. – joncahill Sep 24 2010 at 3:19
We have gotten a lot of feedback on this change and are looking into how we could restore this in a future release. For now, if you haven't gotten things working to your satisfaction, please contact us so we can help out: fogcreek.com/sendmail.html – adambox Oct 26 2010 at 19:21
@joncahill we have a feature request open. you can vote it up here: fogbugz.stackexchange.com/questions/3744/… – adambox Feb 1 2011 at 19:24

Please add me to the list of FogBugz users who are extremely unhappy with the removal of the old Groups feature. As a project manager, I was relying on project groups to track multiple projects in one list. Now I have to use multiple filters to do the same thing.

Please bring back a way to group projects. Since the word "Group" now refers to a user group, you could use "Context" to refer to a project group.

We have a feature request open to add the project grouping ability back into FogBugz. Please drop us a line if you would like to talk about it or need any assistance. fogbugz.stackexchange.com/questions/3744/… – adambox Feb 1 2011 at 19:25

Amen, and me too.

How short sighted was this to not consider the many organizations out there that use the previously purposed Groups called Clients to organize and filter on clients?

Between this gaffe and the fact that we still cannot create HTML case notes is really pushing me to consider something else.

I'm going to send you an email shortly to follow up on this issue – adambox Feb 1 2011 at 19:27
Add me to this list. I just renewed my support contract, and I feel like it was a waste of money. – msemack Mar 22 2011 at 21:57

Me too.

We used the groups feature to group multiple projects into a single product release. (Editing tool + Viewing tool = versioned release) and the capability to filter bugs by Group made it much easier to view all of the cases we needed to address for a particular product release.

Now we must use one of these ineligant workarounds to aggregate the filter results of 2 projects, or live with multiple bug filters.

If I understand this rightly, this means that it is not possible to see all cases assigned to users in a particular group?

In our organisation we have several teams, all of whom might work on different projects. I was hoping to be able to see the cases assigned to my team using groups (as in the answer to this question). This no longer seems to be possible...

I guess what I want is to include groups in assignedTo:.

Groups never let you filter by assigned-to users, it was a mapping to projects only. Could you send us an email to address this and your other questions directly? thanks! fogcreek.com/sendmail.html – adambox Feb 1 2011 at 19:28
I posted a feature request you can vote up for the ability to filter cases assigned to your group members: fogbugz.stackexchange.com/questions/6845/… – adambox Feb 1 2011 at 21:36
