I often find myself helping out with other peoples' cases and cleaning them up by correcting their category, or putting them in the correct project/area, but every time I do this, the assignee and any subscribers are getting sent an email. In almost all cases, all I'm doing is changing a simple field, and I don't usually add any comment text because my changes are pretty self-explanatory (and/or no one else really cares). With the addition of the Tidy Cases plugin, the concept of a "minor edit" was added, and all of these sorts of edit fall under the "minor" category. So, what I want is a way (via a plugin or otherwise) for the system to not send out emails for these minor edits (possibly with an override ability to send the email anyways)

see also this post for more control over Autosubscribe emails.

I like this idea, but I say don't limit it to minor edits. I say there should always be a checkbox next to the OK and Cancel buttons that gives me the option to "Suppress notification emails". – Greg Saven Sep 15 2010 at 13:22
I like your idea even better than mine! The only reason I went with the Minor Edit notifications was because that's what most recently popped this into my head (and is perhaps a smaller battle to fight) – cdeszaq Sep 15 2010 at 14:42

Maybe "minor edits only" could have the checkbox on by default: start enabled, and disable it if typing any text (and still in the default state). The checkbox could be an admin-only option. – Michel de Ruiter Sep 16 2010 at 7:31
I agree w/ Michel that a checkbox to suppress notifications should be admin-only. How do you know what level of detail your subscribers want to see? (You don't even know who your subscribers are. :-) – Rob Sobers Sep 16 2010 at 15:01
So then perhaps the better route might be to give users more fine-grained control over what notifications they get, and possibly give an administrator the ability to override those settings to force out a notification if the admin deems it really important – cdeszaq Sep 16 2010 at 15:10

Integrating plugins with the many ways FogBugz uses email is on the list of things to do. It's a long list, but requests like this are fairly common and it's one of the biggest holes in the plugin API at present, so it's definitely a contender.
