My users have always used LDAP to connect to FogBugz, but now I want to switch and let FogBugz manage the login process. If I flip the switch and turn on FogBugz authentication, how will my users login? Most, if not all of them have never had to set a FogBugz password.

Here's what you can do to switch from LDAP to FogBugz authentication:

  • Go to Admin -> Site Configuration -> Authentication
  • Click the FogBugz tab

If you recall your original administrator password that you set when you first installed FogBugz:

  • Pick "Type email address and passwords"

If you don't recall your FogBugz password:

  • Pick "Names in dropdown, no passwords"
  • Login and set your password (via Admin -> Users)
  • Change the authentication mode to "Type email address and passwords"

Now that you can login, there are a few options for getting all your users setup with a FogBugz password:

  1. You can have people click on the "Forgot my password" link on the login page and they'll get an email with a secret link that lets them set their password.
  2. You can go to Admin -> Users and set everyone's initial FogBugz password for them.
  3. If you trust your users, you can turn "No passwords" mode on temporarily to let everyone login and set their own FogBugz passwords.

Personally, I like #1.

If you ever want to switch back, read this.
