In order to determine the overall progress of the project, it would be very useful to quickly determine the percentage of the estimated work that is already closed.

The formula would be something similar to:

% Completed = SUM(Initial estimation of closed cases) / SUM(Initial estimation of all cases).

It'd be shown in the "Cases matching this filter" box, as an additional calculation but, is it available through any other mechanism?

This would be an interesting metric to pull out, especially since our PMs are often trying to quickly gauge the "% completed" of a project. If you can assume the estimates are accurate (or at least close), you can get a good idea of % completed. However, weighting these estimates by developer estimation history would be even more accurate, but this is exactly what EBS does anyways, yes? So perhaps adding a "current completion" to EBS is really what is needed. – cdeszaq Jul 28 2010 at 13:00

The "Cases matching this filter" summary at the bottom of the list already gives you the hours elapsed and hours remaining. Are you looking merely for the % to be shown there?

Have you taken a look at the Burn-down chart?

No, Adam ... the summary information gives us the total time spent but it is not strictly related to the finished work. E.g.: let's suppose that we've got a case with an initial estimation of 30 hours. The developer has spent 43 hours and the case is still not finished. Additionally, 3 cases of 10 hours each were already finished (with a total of 46h dedicated) and 5 cases of 10 hours more each one are still open. The summary would give me: Total estimated time remaining = 50h (5 x 10h) Total elapsed time = 89h (43h + 46h) How could I estimate the percentage in that situation? – Ray Jul 28 2010 at 6:11
Following the example above, I'd expect to have the percentage calculated as : Total closed cases = 30h (3 x 10h) Total cases = 110h (50h open cases + 30h closed cases + 30h current case) Percentage = 30 / 110 = 27 % Do you agree with me? – Ray Jul 28 2010 at 6:14
Ah, yes. Thank you for the clarification. So you are looking for the fraction of cases closed weighted by the original estimate. e.g. 10 cases total, 5 with 2 hour estimates closed, 5 with 1 hour estimates still open = 66.67% complete. I think this is a job for a plugin. I will update my answer shortly – adambox Jul 28 2010 at 11:37

Yes, indeed, Adam! On the other hand, what does "my case FC1923456) mean? – Ray Sep 20 2010 at 10:00

Create a filter with the required fields and data you want. Then save the filter so you can go back later and export to excel at anytime. That will allow you to run your calculations. You can always create custom fields which will allow you to get FogBugz to do almost anything you want.

Hummmm ... don't you think that info is so common, useful and expected that FogBugz should provide it in a easier way? – Ray Jul 23 2010 at 6:43
