As my team tries to move to a backlog model for our sprint planning, we've found it hard to explain what cases are "in" the backlog. I'm aware we can use an unbounded range search query to find cases with a backlog order, so ideally the backlog would be:

milestone:undecided backlog:"1.."

We would then triage new cases filed in Undecided into the backlog by assigning a backlog order.

However, it's a lot clearer to explain and more convenient to search when we use a separate "Product Backlog" milestone, so that our backlog is:

milestone:backlog

Cases then have to be assigned an order and moved into the backlog milestone to appear "in" the backlog.

Is there a clearer shortcut syntax for searching the "1.." range, such as backlog:yes or has:backlog? Would it be possible to add one?

No, backlog:1.. is what you're supposed to use. Other notations such as backlog:yes or has:backlog would be nice but:

  • it can be implemented through a plugin
  • it wouldn't really add anything except some syntactic sugar

I wouldn't hold my breath. If you really need it, consider making a plugin.
