Reason is that competitors might trigger false emails to our support just to check how many cases we're getting, say, in a week. Monday = Case # assigned is 354, Friday = Case number assigned is 454, that means 100 in a week.

One of the softwares I've tested (whose use I dropped for FogBugz) has this mask, so that I can define my case number as, say, yyyymmddcccc, where cccc is a random number.

No offense, but that seems a little paranoid. What harm would it do to your company for a competitor to know how many support calls you get? – JohnFx Feb 14 2010 at 20:58
What harm is it to hide this information from competitors? I totally can see how competitors could use this information in marketing to similar customers. I think this is a good feature request. – Rick Schummer Feb 14 2010 at 23:39

No harm in the feature. I just don't think that information is that valuable to competitors. Does a high number of support calls indicate (A) lots of customers; (B) lots of problems; or (C) lots of feature requests? What effect does it have on your impression of the company that used forged support requests to spy on their competitor's support queue. Seems like that would backfire more than help. – JohnFx Feb 15 2010 at 22:52
You know, as Rick said, what harm would it do not to have it? If case number is an AutoInc field, ok, some nice changes are needed. But if not, generating a random is rather easy, and based on some masks, we could get what we wanted. Anyway, just leave it on the wishlist, absolutely nothing to complain about this wonderful piece of software ! – Fernando Feb 16 2010 at 13:59

We offer the ability to increment the starting case number via the API. If you wanted to check the highest case number via a script and inject some random jumps on a semi-regular basis, this should be enough to throw some uncertainty into anyone's calculations.

Once the spam starts rolling into your mailbox (and it will) that should be enough of a variable to throw anyone off.

A positive use for spam... I like it! – James McLeod Feb 15 2010 at 19:51
The API by the way is very rich, I'm still digging into it. That offered me the possibility to automatically send monthly logs from my Delphi app into Fog... great! – Fernando Feb 16 2010 at 13:54
