When Autosort is on, spam-handling works fine: a "magic" undeletable Spam area is created and pressing the Spam button closes a case, sends it to the Spam area, and the case no longer shows up in regular searches.

For various reasons I cannot use Autosort, so I have to deal with spam manually. I created an area named "Spam" in the appropriate project. However, I encountered the following problems when selecting an inquiry and pressing the Spam button:

1) The case is not automatically moved to the Spam area.

2) The case still shows up in regular searches.

3) If I manually move the case to the Spam area, the case still shows up in regular searches.

So how do I get the spam-handling stuff working when Autosort is off?

Unfortunately it only works as a whole package.

We've never heard of someone wanting the spam button and area, but not Autosort. The only solution here would be to create your own plug-in to add a Spam button and area. You could likely replicate most of the functionality.

It's almost a given that every mailbox is going to get spam. So are you saying that everyone is using Autosort? We don't like it for the following reasons: 1) Spam is handled on our mail server with extensively configured white lists, black lists, 3rd party spam services, etc. If an email gets through that, we MUST look at it, and don't want AutoSort deciding it's spam. 2) Don't like being forced to have "Undecided" and "Not Spam" areas. 3) Don't like AutoSort guessing about which area to put the mail in. We have many mailboxes and each must go to a particular area - no guessing involved. – danielm Jan 27 2010 at 19:03
While researching about how I might create such a plugin, I found that quite a few people are using the spam button without Autosort. In fact, a request was logged to address this back in 2005, but not sure what ever became of that: support.fogcreek.com/default.asp?fogbugz.4.5323.1 – danielm Jan 27 2010 at 22:42
