Feature Request: Allow to share filters for groups

We have a long list of filters. Some are used by certain teams, others are used by individuals only and other individuals can benefit from them.

We would like the list of shared filters to become a bit shorter by hiding filters that are irrelevant.

Can a filter be shared with only one, or a group of persons? Or is there another way to filter the shared filters list?

This doesn't directly answer your question, but could be helpful for your situation. As far as I know, Shared Filters are only visible to you if you have read permissions on the Projects to which the filter refers.

You won't be able to see shared filters if they're for Projects where you have no read permissions.

Concomitantly, your search results only include cases which you have permission to read.

That could be a solution, but we'd like to keep open the possibility to follow other projects internally, than the ones you are in. – Nicolaj Schweitz Jan 13 2010 at 11:12
As long as you have at least read permission on the other Projects, you'll be able to see the shared filters which refer to those projects. To me, this design automatically keeps the list shortened to stuff that's relevant. That said, it would indeed be cool to specify groups or individuals with whom one can shares one's filters. Individual's filters are not visible to anyone unless they've been shared out. Maybe you can ask your users to unshare their personal filters? – Justine Jan 13 2010 at 15:03

How's this for a work around - distribute the filters for individuals and small groups as shared filters initially. Delete them after people have transferred them into their My Filters area.

Here's a process to clarify what I mean:

  • I need a filter that I know a few other people might want to use... I create it as a Shared Filter named ZZ << filter purpose >>
  • for now, everyone can see it, at the bottom of the shared filters list. I email anyone who I think might like that filter.
  • Users who want to use this filter go to Filters -> Manage saved filters... and Customize the shared filter name, removing ZZ
  • the edited filter then becomes a new Saved Filter in that user's My Filters
  • when I know everyone who wants one has a copy, I remove the Share on my original copy

That is a good one! Do you think this would work for deleting filters that have been left by users that are unreachable (quit the job or something like that)? – Nicolaj Schweitz Jan 14 2010 at 9:26
I think you can edit them and make the copies private, but to delete the public ones that are owned by a user, you have to somehow access the system as that user. – PJM Jan 14 2010 at 15:17
