What I'd like is the ability for admins to set up and manage a list of synonyms. For example, our product involves managing employees. A synonym list would thus have:
staff|employee|employees|worker|workers
Naturally, sometimes this might get too inclusive, but that'd be on the admin to manage, not anyone else.
