In our FogBugz installation, we have a number of users who are meant to be administrative-only users. That is, it does not make sense for them to be a part of any project within FogBugz. This is necessary to manage groups, add users (we do not allow auto-add), etc.

Unfortunately, all these users appear within every project and people may inadvertently assign cases to them. It would be great if FogBugz supported administrators who were not related to any project within FogBugz but rather only performed administrative functions.

we are finally trying to migrate to the much improved permission system in our FogBugz installation. As we are working a lot with temporary Freelancers the concept of a Group didnt really work for us: we were routinely creating one group per project. So what we want to do is basically assigning each Project the list of Users who can access it, and basically removing almost all groups.

So i see on the Projects page a nice list of all Users
On the Users page i see a list of all the Groups the user is in.

What i am missing on the Users page is a list of all the Projects the user is in.

Is there any possibility to get such a list? It looks like there isnt any? This would be very interesting to see

Hi Folks
If I want to allow the people in my team to work on several projects which are running concurrently, how do I get accurate completion date estimates for each project? The problem is that each project would seem to be calculated in isolation, assuming that each contributor is working on just that project.
Many thanks

When global milestones should be used?

How do they affect the EBS?

I think that should be explained in more detail than in current docs. The global milestones report isn't completely clear.

I do a wide variety of freelancing projects, the number of projects
within my FogBugz instance is larger than at a company that only supports a
few products. Within a year, there could be well over 100 projects, and this
would clearly make the product more difficult to use, specifically by
overflowing the reports menu, and increasing the number of choices on all
project selection dropdowns, making it more difficult to find the correct
project.

I know that you have a feature to delete projects. I tried deleting a
project and noticed that it remained part of the account, and could be
undeleted later. However, when I deleted a project, I could not filter past
cases on the project. For completed projects, I would like to be able to see
past cases, time spent, and other data, which I cannot do with deleted
projects in the current state.

I propose two solutions:

1) Create a new filter category for "Deleted Projects" which would function
identically to how the "Projects" filter works, except the dropdown would
only show deleted projects. This would solve the problem by allowing me to
view data on deleted projects.

2) Create a new action for archiving projects which would function similar
to how deleting projects works now. Then create a new filter category for
"Archived Projects" which would function identically to how the "Projects"
filter works, except the dropdown would only show archived projects.

Hi there are there any possibilities to copy the structure of a project or create a template with some default data in it?
In our installation of Fogbugz, we have a long list of projects (and it's been growing). The projects are easily split up between teams. So most developers only really care about the couple projects his team is working on. It would be nice to be able to have another level of hierarchy above "Project" that would allow the projects to be sorted and more easily according to each functional group (acting similar to the "Project"/"Area" relationship).

One of our users actually wrote a plugin that implements this feature. It needed to be a little hacky though to get the new drop-down menu to display in the right spot (left of the "Project" drop-down). The other problem is maintainability. Our plugin has to be fixed over and over as Fogbugz grows and changes from release to release. It might be nice to add support for gui manipulation to the api if you can't add this kind of functionality as a core feature.

What we have right now is a new "Organization" drop-down that filters the next "Project" drop-down (only displays projects in the selected organization). The "Project drop-down then filters the "Area" drop-down as it does in the normal installation.

I have an existing project in FB that is used by a small team of developers for a software product. The project contains about 10 areas that correspond to functional areas within the software. The areas are used for filtering/sorting purposes and to allow different primary contacts for different areas.

We now have a need to allow a small group of external customers to submit cases and receive feedback on those cases. A technical support group will have primary responsibility for handling these customer cases and following up with customers. If bugs are found or if other developer support is needed, then we need to be able to assign these cases to the development team. We also want the ability to easily filter customer cases, development cases, or both.

We looking at the public submission feature to help accomplish this. We don't want to open up public submission in the existing development project for a few reasons. First, we don't want to allow public submissions to be assigned directly to development, they should always go to support. Second, we want the public submission interface to present a different set of areas: problem, feature request, question.

To allow different contacts and areas for public vs development cases, it seems that we must use separate projects. If the product is named XYZ, then the projects could be "XYZ Development" and "XYZ Support". This leaves a few problems.

Using separate projects, searching/filtering becomes more difficult when we want to include both development and support cases. I know it's possible to search multiple projects via the search interface, and that can be saved as a filter, but that's not as simple as just setting up a filter. It would be helpful if FB would add the ability to define filters that include multiple projects. Another thing that would help is the ability to define subprojects. We could have a root project for the product, and subprojects for development and support. Searches on the root project would include all subprojects. I know we could also use tags and search for tags, but since tags are entered manually as free text I'm reluctant to rely on them being entered consistently and correctly.

The more important problem is how to assign cases from support to development. If we change the project of a support case, it would be removed from the radar of the tech support team. We also couldn't maintain unique project areas if we move cases back and forth between the projects. One seemingly simple solution would be if FB would allow cases to exist in multiple projects. Barring that, the best solution I can think of is to use subcases. For example, say that a customer submits a case in the support project. Tech support confirms that it is a bug that needs to be assigned to development. They create a subcase and assign the subcase to development. They monitor the progress of the subcase, and when it is resolved they followup with the customer and resolve the support case. This would accomplish what we need, and has the benefit that the customer and development cases can have different assignments and resolutions. My concern is that creating the subcase is a little tedious and possibly error prone.

Does anyone have suggestions for different or better ways to do this?

Thanks in advance for any input.

For a future version I'd like to have sub-projects. For example with my aviation software I have a product line "Logbook Pro." I need sub-projects for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7, Web Edition, etc.

After some searching, seems no one has asked this; if this is redundant, I'm sure I will receive the appropriate hand-slap...

The problem: We have a number of projects, some large and some small. Our project list has grown and its become difficult to manage. Besides that, its just plain ugly. (I'm using a wiki to help out now, but 2 documents for one task = issues ) After a while I forget (imagine that) some project details and have to consult "other" document sources.

Over the past year, we have standardized on using FogBugz more for our requirements and work tracking (love the new expanded work items and nested cases). Now, if we can capture more "project" level detail inside FogBugz, we could eliminate another document... (a good thing)

I would like to request 2 added fields for projects:

Category or TAG Field

Notes Field

The Category (or TAG) would filter displayed projects. I would prefer to either select the category before seeing the list of projects, or provide a check box, or TAG field, to show the projects with which I am interested. Creating a [deleted] or [closed] tag, for example, would resolve a previous user's feature request, helping to keep closed projects silently tucked away. The ability to have multiple TAG's per project would be way kewl...

The Notes field could be a simple text field (lots of text space desired), or perhaps even a wiki style text field where I can describe this project -- This field would enable me to record WHY and for WHOM this project is being generated, as well as any other pertinent project details.

I believe these fields are in line with the spirit of FogBugz -- clean and simple operation. The world has embraced Stack Overflow and know how tags work to filter content so the learning curve is also reduced. A push in our shop is also to reduce the number of documents we produce to generate a product -- this will be a GREAT help towards that end.

Hi!

We are using the Fogbugz trial, and we are making a project per customer to handle their cases.
The other option would be to use projects to categorize cases.
Either way we are missing an addressbook.

Is it possible to have an addressbook that is not FogBugz-user related?
We need to have an external contact person, address, phone number, email for each project/customer. Or if they differ, have a case-specific contact person etc.

Please advise

Best regards

I used to be a team lead that used FogBugz to manage our project, using FogBugz 6 and 7. It was really useful to have the Evidence Based Scheduling show us our burndown and predictions.

I'm now at a different company, and have converted them to FogBugz, and we're on version 8. We have a three week release schedule, and all our projects adhere to them.

We are using Global milestones. When I goto the schedules menu and select a project, I get no scheduling information. The project's own milestones are on the list to report on, but none of the global milestones. Since we don't use individual project milestones, this makes the project reports useless. We don't get any data.

I can see overall reporting using Schedules -> Global Milestones, but i can't break it down by project.

EBS is really useful, and our company is getting ready to make more use of it. Global milestones seem to take this feature mostly away from us. Why can't I get reporting in a project on a global milestone? This is seriously frustrating, as I know how useful EBS is.

We manage several projects using FogBugz with several different Project Managers. A project is defined in our company as a client. So there are many cases associated with each project/client.

We have a monthly PM's meeting to bid and discuss our system wide priorities. We currently use a paper and pencil to "publish" these priorities. These priorities could contain a case or two but 99.9% of the time they are Projects. We use this to shuffle people around to meet deliverable dates or back people off of projects that may not need any of their attention.

As we grow we are starting to use FogBugz more and more, and we are also using PM's and developers that are outside of our home office (me included... :-( ). I want to be able to allow everyone to see these prioritizes and to see how every project is ranked.
